This year’s Logistics Innovation Technology Days (LIT), which took place on 11 and 12 April at the EPG headquarters in Boppard-Buchholz, were an intensive industry get-together. The presentations, masterclasses and discussions about Greenplan, the innovative route planning solution and the comprehensive EPG services inspired the participants. Werner Geilenkirchen once again hosted the two-day event, this time welcoming speakers from Deloitte, DHL, the University of Bonn and the Smart Freight Centre, among others.

“At the LIT events, you gain important insights
with a clear focus on the every day challenges in logistics.”

Werner Geilenkirchen, Managing Partner at HERZIG,
Lecturer and moderator

The energy and good atmosphere continued into the evening hours, especially in the truly extraordinary Lemabri Restaurant, where the networking events with kitchen party and flying buffet ensured a lasting dialogue

In the midst of the ongoing crises, one could easily fall into resignation. Yet there are so many good developments, so much commitment at all levels, which make it so much easier to keep faith in the #future

And what will we do?

– With the recently confirmed qualification as DNK (German Sustainability Codex) training partner, we strengthen our consulting competence at the intersection of CSR and Logistics.

– Together with a new project partner, we want to further optimize internal and external brand work. In the future, we will be able to organize the dialog with stakeholders (keyword smart employer branding) much more intensively and efficiently. More on this soon.

– At the beginning of February, we will look at internationally successful examples of sustainable logistics and urban development in Doha and will certainly return with many new impulses.

– In tried and tested cooperation with the our Federal Logistics Initiative we want to continue our “30 minutes for more sustainability” webinar series in 2023 and expand its content.

– On November 10, our eighth VISION.LOGISTIK. event will take place. The motto 2023:
TURNING POINTS. Economy. Mobility. Transportation.

– The image of logistics is (still) too bad. Reason enough to continue our professional and private commitment to greater acceptance of commercial transport. After all, shaping the future is not the task of politics alone – it’s up to all of us.

And what else? As before: Full hearted support for LSPs.

With its new own direct connection for rail transports between Germany and Turkey our customer sets course for more sustainability!

A Company Intermodal train managed by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für kombinierten Güterverkehr mbH & Co. KG
(Kombiverkehr) started its first journey from Munich to Halkali in Turkey on 21 January on behalf of the freight forwarding company. The train will initially run once a week in both directions. The second round trip is already
in preparation.

The train will cover a distance of around 2,000 kilometres each way and cross six national borders – without having to reload the transport containers. Another advantage: compared to continuous road freight transport, the new Company Intermodal train saves almost 80 tonnes of CO2 in the round trip, which corresponds to a 70 percent reduction
in emissions.

“We have been combining the train connection across the Alps with the ferry in Trieste on the Turkey-Bavaria route and back for years – and will continue to do so,” says Iskender Cobanoglu, Managing Director at Boltas – the German part of the logistics group. The new Company Intermodal train complements this offer: customers of the COBANTUR
BOLTAS Group can now choose which of the two transport routes is better for them. Depending on the destination in Turkey, the transit time or, for example, the transport of special hazardous goods, the overland route, which is handled 100 per cent by rail, may then be the more suitable solution. “In this way, we are sending a clear signal in favour of rail, decoupling ourselves a good deal from the shortage of truck drivers and are even more climate-friendly,” says Cobanoglu.

COBANTUR BOLTAS got the intermodal train rolling with the help of Kombiverkehr KG. Both companies have been working together successfully for years – and have now put a company goods train on the rails for COBANTUR BOLTAS for the first time. “To make this challenging project possible, we conducted intensive negotiations with tractionaries,
terminals and authorities,” says Alexander Ochs, Managing Director of the Frankfurt based operator. “So it is all the more gratifying that today, here at the DUSS terminal in Munich-Riem, together with our customer and also in the presence of the Bavarian State Ministry of Housing, Construction and Transport, we are sending the first train on its
journey.” Kombiverkehr takes care of the rental of wagons and replacement wagons, terminal services, round-the-clock train monitoring and order management. “An efficient complete package,” says Ochs. Traction on the through route is provided by DB Cargo AG on behalf of Kombiverkehr.

2021 was also a Corona year. It is like deja vu when we have to realize that work and private life take up a particularly large amount of energy during a crisis and that everyone is looking forward to a peaceful time around the coming holidays – including us. But we carry on regardless in 2022!

But before that we want to say thank you again. Thank you that we could continue to work together well and trustfully despite all the ongoing difficulties. All the more it is our greatest wish that we can meet and exchange “normally” again soon. We all miss that very much.

Our traditional agency vacations begin this year on Dec-17, 2021. We will be back on Jan-13, 2022 and look forward to what we hope will be a normal new year.

Please stay healthy!

As one of the leading companies in the maritime and logistics industry in Europe, DFDS continues to expand its intermodal transports and, in cooperation with our customer, Cobantur Boltas, offers additional weekly round trips on the direct rail connection Nuremberg-Trieste, which went into operation last fall.

On April 11, 2021, DFDS launched routes connected to its railway connections, strengthening its sustainable supply chain services. The first solution of the Intermodal competence center launched in partnership with primeRail Gmbh, the new line gets new routes. The new services allow trailers and truck beds loaded in Turkey to their recipients in Europe in an environmentally friendly and fast way in a period marked by the pandemic which has made logistics all the more crucial.

“The increased frequency of this particular line is again proofing the success of the long standing cooperation between Cobantur Boltas and DFDS as well as the growing importance of sustainable logistics solutions.” says Iskender Cobanoglu, member of the Board of Directors at Cobantur Boltas and Managing Director of our consulting customer, the German Boltas GmbH.

“DFDS Mediterranean Business Unit continues to enhance its already powerful intermodal infrastructure further,” said Lars Hoffmann, the Head of DFDS Mediterranean Business Unit, about the new routes on the Nuremberg-Trieste connection line. “Our new line is the first solution of our intermodal competence center in partnership with primeRail Gmbh. We are very happy to ramp up our range of services with new routes.”

Timetable of the expanded connection: every Thursday and Sunday there is a service from Trieste to Nuremberg. Vice versa, from Nuremberg to Trieste, departures are on Tuesday and Friday.

In these strange times we would like to thank you shortly before the Christmas vacations. Thanks a million that we could work together really well and trustingly even without our usual meetings around the projects or at logistic events. Nevertheless, it is our greatest wish that we will soon be able to meet again in person and exchange ideas. That is something we really miss.

We have noticed that work and private life require a lot of energy during the crisis and that everyone is looking forward to a peaceful time around the coming holidays – so are we.

Our traditional agency vacations begin this year on December-17, 2020, we will be back on January– 13, 2021 and look forward to a good 2021 together.

Baar/Hamburg, 18 November 2020 – Our consulting customer, the JCL Group, is responding to the challenges posed by the global pandemic and the associated demands on the company by changing its organisational structure. The new management team aims to keep the SME logistics provider on track for future success.

‘We believe our ability to adapt quickly and flexibly to new conditions will be crucial in the future’, says Svend Hartog, Spokesperson of the Management Board. And why it was necessary to change from the old matrix structure to a product-related organisation. The advantages arising from this are closer customer proximity, more direct communication and faster response times.

For this to function successfully, JCL has now restructured its Management Board, allocating managerial responsibility to four individuals. Svend Hartog is responsible for the B2C business, Christof Marx heads the Road & Rail division and Axel Hinz runs the Air & Ocean business. Guido Schmid as CFO is in charge of the Group’s finances and back office. ‘We are confident that the combination of “Product Heads” and a strong national management team will strengthen our position even more in the future. The new organisational structure will generate additional synergies. Going forward, we intend to transfer these to other product areas using the principle of best practice’, says Hartog.

Under one roof

The merger of the three German JCL national companies was also designed to speed up processes and increase transparency. In November all expertise and services have been bundled under one roof. In concrete terms, this means that the three companies JCL Air & Ocean GmbH, JCL Fulfillment Germany GmbH and JCL Logistics Germany GmbH are merging to form JCL Logistics Germany GmbH, based in Hamburg. ‘The JCL Group is a medium-sized logistics service provider operating throughout Europe and is already a permanent fixture in the DACH region and Benelux. Now, thanks to the comprehensive range of restructuring measures, we are on track for growth’, says Hartog. ‘And are ready for future crises.’

About JCL Logistics

The JCL Group is an owner-managed logistics specialist for leading European brands, including the paper, steel, chemical, beverage, furniture and bicycle industries.

JCL supports logistics decision-makers in securing the success of their companies by providing exceptional customer centricity, agile structures and a wealth of experience.

The Group employs 1,300 people in eight countries and 55 of its own branches and is supported by smart IT to ensure the best KPIs in transport and warehouse management. B2C is a particular focus, JCL is a leader in the field of home deliveries. JCL’s strong network and efficient multimodal mix of Road, Rail, Air and Ocean create the foundation for high customer satisfaction.

The name Jöbstl has been a familiar fixture in the logistics industry for almost 100 years. The Group currently generates an annual turnover of over CHF 350 million, the main focus being the DACH region and Benelux. Headquartered in Baar, Switzerland, JCL remains committed to sustainability, both now and in the future, so that it can continue to operate in harmony from social, ecological and economic standpoints. JCL pursues these values for the benefit of its customers, both as a training company and an attractive employer.

The new direct connection, implemented in cooperation between Cobantur Boltas and DFDS Mediterranean Business Unit, the Turkey subsidiary of DFDS, expands our customers range of sustainable transports between Europe, Turkey and beyond.

Successful launch of the new connection

The first train on the new line left Trieste last Thursday, November 5 and reached the TriCon-Terminal in Nuremberg on Friday, November 6, 2020. The connection is part of the intermodal freight traffic to Turkey, Greece and the neighboring economic areas. The new block train is operated by DFDS and connects Nuremberg, via Trieste, with Pendik and Ambarli in Turkey and Patras in Greece, with regional and supra-regional pre-carriage and onward carriage in each case.

The weekly train consists of 4 double pocket wagons and 26 flat wagon groups with a capacity of 8 megatrailers and 26 45-foot containers. In the near future, an increase in the service to 2 – 3 weekly departures is planned.

The President of the DFDS Mediterranean Business Unit, Lars Hoffmann, highlighted the importance of the Nuremberg-Trieste connection as a strategic development: “The DFDS Mediterranean Business Unit, in partnership with Cobantur Boltas, has become the operator of the new direct rail link Nuremberg-Trieste, further improving our sustainable supply chain services. We are very pleased to have added another strategically important service to our service portfolio”.

A strong intermodal infrastructure

As one of the largest integrated shipping and logistics companies in Europe and operator of narrow route networks in the North Sea, Baltic Sea, English Channel and Mediterranean, DFDS offers a strong intermodal transport infrastructure, with ro-ro services between Turkey and Europe and rail connections from Italy.

DFDS has decided to establish an intermodal competence center in Cologne, Germany, as train solutions are considered an important part of its future business. This new line is the first successful project of the competence center and the joint venture with primeRail GmbH.

The Turkish-German logistics association Cobantur Boltas, based in Maltepe/İstanbul, and Allersberg/Nuremberg, has been handling transports via Trieste for 20 years. “With the new service, we are expanding our range of resilient and sustainable connections between these now closer economic areas with the support of DFDS,” says Iskender Cobanoglu, member of the Board of Directors at Cobantur Boltas and Managing Director of the German Boltas GmbH.
